Formal
Formal is a phrase that is commonly used and is usually relates to an established procedure or a set of specific behaviours. The term formal will often be regarded as the opposite to informal. Formal can be used to refer to numerous different matters including logic, mathematics, linguistics, and chemistry and computer science. Most commonly the phrase formal will be used in terms of linguistics and it is also often used in order to describe different events. Some people will describe certain clothing as formal or informal; this will usually be linked to the kind of event that is taking place.
As previously mentioned the phrase formal will usually be used in order to describe linguistics. Formal language is usually referred to as being properly spoken language where words are pronounced properly. For example formal language does not include any kind of slang or shortening of words; only full proper English will be used during formal conversation. The use of formal language is often linked to the setting; formal settings usually require formal language. One of the prime examples of a formal setting where formal language should be used is in an interview situation. Formal language is also commonly used in conversations where people do not know each other.
There are numerous different events that are often described or referred to as formal. Interviews are most commonly formal events where people will be expected to wear formal attire. Many evening balls and dinner parties are also held on a formal basis. Invitations that are sent out for events will usually state whether it is a formal or informal event. In cases where it is formal there will be an expectation to wear formal attire; this will usually consist of a suit for a male and an evening dress or trouser suit for a female.
Formal occasions will often be very different to informal occasions; the latter will be much more laid back and relaxing evenings. For most people informal occasions are more enjoyable and offer a much more laid back atmosphere. As well as being used to refer to linguistics and events the phrase formal is used for many other matters. In many cases the term will be used in order to address chemistry, mathematics, logic and computer science.
